Buffalo's Goo Goo Dolls are like the Replacements' goofier brothers -- they have all the garage energy of the 'Mats, only without the depth of Paul Westerberg's songwriting. Still, that doesn't deny the pleasure of the band's sonic rush; they have enough hooks and melodies to please fans of both the Replacements and Cheap Trick. As Goo Goo Dolls make more albums, their songwriting keeps improving and the band gets tighter. 1993's Superstar Car Wash edged them further into the mainstream, thanks to the single "We Are the Normal", which was co-written with their idol Westerberg, and 1995's A Boy Named Goo was the trio's commercial breakthrough, launching the major hit ballad "Name." In 1998, the Goo Goo Dolls launched another smash with "Iris", culled from the soundtrack to the film City of Angels; the full-length Dizzy Up the Girl appeared later that same year.
